Wah Ying CHONG

I met Wah Ying CHONG at a gathering when she talked about going through her father’s objects. The story began from our following chats at her home. Her father Rev. Yan Cham CHAU served the Chinese Christian Church for most of his life. He was also once the editor of Q-Sing Times that was a Chinese periodic newspaper in Auckland of his generation. When going through the objects with me, Wah Ying recalled her scattered memories of the family; and how the New Zealand Chinese families and friends supported each other. I posed her holding one of the glittering silver trophies that honoured her father’s service to the communities for a Portrait photograph. I could feel and share her joy when clicking the camera. To complement the portrait, I placed two gifted medals[1] on top of a portrait photograph of Rev. Yan Cham CHAU to complete the Object photograph.

For many New Zealand born Chinese, these once were bitter-sweet memories have become joyful stories of the family that will pass on to future generations.

[1] The two medals are a SUN Yet Sen Centenary Commemoration bronze medal issued in the 54th year of the Republic of China (12th November 1965) and a commemorative gold-plated bronze medal issued in the 45th year of the Republic of China (31st October 1956) for the seventieth birthday of President CHIANG Kai-shek.

周华英

我在一个聚会上认识了周华英，当时她正谈论父亲周润森牧师遗留的家物。其后我到她家附近与她倾谈她父亲的故事。周润森牧师终身奉献教会，有一段时间亦是屋伦侨声中文杂志的编辑。华英向我展示物品时，重拾了一些父辈们及当年华人家庭怎样互相支持的回忆片段。我请她捧着父亲为社区贡献而获颁的荣誉奖杯来造像，我按快门的一刻，感受到她发自内心的喜悦，凝聚在照片中。拍摄家物时，我将周润森获得的两个奖章[1]放在他的照片上，与周华英捧着的奖杯照互相辉映。

对大多数新西兰华人而言，过往那些夹杂着甜与苦的回忆，是现今娓娓道来存留后代的快乐经历。 

[1] 两个奖章分别是国父百年诞辰纪念铜章 (一九六五年十一月十二日)及蒋总统七秩华诞纪念章(一九五六年十月三十一日)。
